Visualizations of node-link diagrams are crucial in fields like software modeling, biology, and project management. Traditional methods, such as sketching on paper or using digital tools, have limitations, including cumbersome mouse interactions and inadequate support for navigating large diagrams on small screens. This thesis explores innovative technologies like interactive displays and digital pens to enhance visual diagram modeling. The primary goal is to identify effective interaction techniques, gestures, and methods for diagram editing and exploration. The research introduces a set of interaction techniques for basic diagram editing on interactive surfaces, enabling quick mode-switches through user-defined gestures and allowing simultaneous sketching and structural editing via multitouch and pen input. A second technique set focuses on creating diagram layouts, incorporating tools and gestures tailored to domain experts' needs. Additionally, it presents digital pen and paper methods that integrate hand-drawn diagrams with digital formats. To improve diagram navigation, an off-screen visualization technique is introduced, featuring interactive proxy elements along the viewport's border to represent off-screen nodes and facilitate quick navigation.
