Price provides a fascinating travelogue of his journey by sail from England to Madagascar and of his subsequent trips on church business in that country (1875-1877). The author is a careful chronicler of his daily encounters, a frank commentator of persons and situations, and also an informed observer of conditions in this island kingdom, such as state-church relations, Malagasy custom, local government, or economic life. Needless to say, his account also tells much about missionaries, including himself.
