Cardiac hypertrophy and related phenomena have garnered significant attention in recent years, particularly within the basic sciences. This volume presents the proceedings from the Erwin RIESCH SYMPOSIUM on "CARDIAC ADAPTATION TO HEMODYNAMIC OVERLOAD, TRAINING AND STRESS," held in Tübingen from September 19-22, 1982. Building on topics from previous symposia in 1976 and 1979, this meeting expanded its scope to explore various aspects of chronic heart and vascular responses to abnormal hemodynamic loading, as well as influences from maturation, aging, training, neuroendocrine status, and stress. A key focus was on cardiac reactions at the level of contractile proteins, with an emphasis on the long-term adaptation of the heart. While cutting-edge research may yield differing conclusions, and individual contributions may not always align with the editors' perspectives, the diverse approaches from biochemists, biologists, pathologists, physiologists, pharmacologists, and clinical cardiologists will enrich the interpretation of results across fields. This variety is expected to stimulate a reexamination of established concepts and guide future research directions.
