Da trent’anni un fenomeno dall’origine sconosciuta sta alterando l’ecosistema costiero di un territorio nel Sud degli Stati Uniti. Cosa (o chi...) ha generato l’Area X, cosa avviene all’interno del confine impenetrabile che la divide dal resto del mondo, quale destino attende chi decide di esplorarla? Sono domande a cui, da trent’anni, tenta di rispondere la Southern Reach, un’agenzia governativa segreta incaricata di studiare il fenomeno. Senza risultati, almeno finora. Alla Southern Reach c’è un nuovo direttore: John Rodriguez, anche se tutti lo chiamano Controllo. Eppure quello che sembra mancargli è proprio il controllo sulle cose.
