Eighteenth century Xebero

Maggiori informazioni sul libro

The main purpose of this book is to provide a modern description of early eighteenth-century Jebero/Xebero, based on the codices Ms. Add. 25,323 and 25,324, likely authored by Samuel Fritz, a Jesuit missionary. Jebero is a nearly extinct indigenous language from North Peru, previously little understood. The book also includes a diplomatic transcription of these manuscripts, with one containing a Spanish-Quechua-Jebero vocabulary and the other presenting Jebero grammar alongside a Quechua-Jebero/Jebero-Quechua Christian doctrine. Notably, this doctrine features Jebero prayers by Fray Lucas de la Cueva. Additionally, the author compares de la Cueva’s 17th-century prayers with those of Fritz from the 18th century, highlighting the linguistic evolution of Jebero over time. Dr. Astrid Alexander-Bakkerus, the author, holds a Master’s in French and a Ph.D. in Comparative Linguistics from the University of Leiden. Currently a guest researcher at the Amsterdam Centre for Language and Communication, she is part of the Revitalizing Older Linguistic Documentation research group. Her work primarily focuses on typological descriptions of indigenous South Amerindian languages, including Jebero and various Quechua dialects.
