Maggiori informazioni sul libro

The visual artist Eric Isenburger (1902–1994) and his wife, expressionist dancer Jula Isenburger, née Elenbogen (1908–2000), are largely forgotten figures of the 20th century. The Museum Giersch der Goethe-Universität is presenting a comprehensive retrospective exhibition in Eric’s native city for the first time. After training at Frankfurt’s Kunstgewerbeschule, Eric embarked on numerous study trips, including a significant stay in Barcelona. He and Jula initially lived in Vienna and later in Berlin as independent artists. As Jews, they faced repression from the National Socialist regime starting in 1933, leading to their flight across Europe. Their journey included stops in Paris, Stockholm, Southern France, and internment camps Les Milles and Camp de Gurs, before finally obtaining a visa for the USA in 1941 and settling in New York. Despite the hardships they endured, Eric Isenburger produced a remarkable body of work featuring portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. His late-Impressionist style, combined with an expressive approach and experimental techniques, reflects his observations of the outer world while avoiding overt commentary on his times. His extraordinary oeuvre is a true discovery!
