Maggiori informazioni sul libro

SOS Brutalism documents an international campaign to protect and preserve brutalist architecture, initiated by the Deutsches Architekturmuseum DAM in Frankfurt and the Wüstenrot Foundation. Since the 1950s, architects worldwide have created buildings that embody an uncompromising attitude, often using exposed concrete, or “béton brut.” Today, many of these controversial structures face demolition or reconstruction that could alter their appearance significantly. The movement, utilizing the hashtag #SOSBrutalism, aims to safeguard this vital global heritage of 20th-century architecture through extensive research. This comprehensive volume presents a global survey of brutalist architecture from the 1950s to the 1970s, featuring contributions from around 100 authors documenting approximately 120 key buildings, including many previously unpublished sites at risk of neglect or demolition. The book offers overviews of brutalism across twelve regions worldwide, alongside case studies from significant locations such as Skopje and New Haven. Additionally, it includes essays on the history and theory of brutalism, enriching the discussion around these structures. A supplementary booklet features papers from an international symposium on brutalism held in Berlin in 2012, further enhancing the exploration of this architectural movement.
