Die Vergänglichkeit und das Sterben, aber auch ein koketter Umgang mit dem Tod, sind in der Rock- und Popmusik der Jugendkultur der 1950er und 1960er-Jahre omnipräsent. Die Themen ähneln denjenigen der Bildenden Künste aus der Tradition der Totentänze und Vanitas-Darstellungen. Der vorliegende Band führt die beiden Stränge zusammen: Exemplarisch werden Songs und Bands vom Beat der 1960er-Jahre, dem Classic Rock, Punk und Reggae bis hin zum Pop und Hip Hop vorgestellt und mit Abbildungen aus der Graphiksammlung Mensch und Tod der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf sowie zeitgenössischen Kunstwerken verknüpft. Transience and mortality – but also a coquettish way of dealing with death – are omnipresent in the rock and pop music of the youth culture of the 1950s and 60s. The themes are similar to those of the fine arts from the tradition of the ‘dance of death’ and vanitas motifs. The present volume brings the two strands together.
