Great Wall Chinese is a major project planned and organized by the China National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (NOCFL). It is the core textbook used by "Confucius Institutes", the NOCFL Chinese learning centers now being set up around the world. The goal is to develop students' Chinese communicative competence through a combination of on-line multimedia courseware, CD's, classroom teaching, textbooks and workbooks. Part One, Essentials in Communication, consists of six volumes (Parts Two and Three will be developed in the future). These beginner volumes cover personal information, communication for survival, daily life, studying and working, social activities, etc., built around the lives of an international group of foreign students in China and their Chinese friends. Textbooks are illustrated in an attractive manga style.
