The discovery of gold in the Colorado Rockies during the last century was to change the face of the mountains--and the fledging state--forever. Thousand of people poured into this region in search of wealth, and small settlements grew into thriving communities almost overnight. The lodes ran out, but they left behind the foundations of some of the Wests's most dynamic cities.There are still riches in the Colorado mountains, but for many the riches are the mountains themselves. People still flock to the Centennial State, but now they come to escape the pressures of twentieth-century life in this, one of the most scenic regions of the world.
