Described as a difficult and dark painter, Georges Rouault's oeuvre is deeply experimental. Rouault's work explodes the genre of painting, drawing upon the residue of Gustave Moreau's symbolism, the extremities of Fauvism, and the radical theatrical experiments of Alfred Jarry.
