Humor is recognized as a universal trait, yet at first glance that trait seems to be wanting among people living under the Soviet system. A visitor is invariably struck by the somberness of people on the streets of Moscow, Leningrad, Odessa, Vilnius, Tallinn or any other city where tourists are permitted. Few people smile or exchange harmless banter in public and most wear preoccupied looks on their faces. Even wedding portraits are typically characterized by bland, seemingly world-weary expressions.
