The Eastern Question - An Examination of International Relations from 1774 to 1923 In this classic work, M. S. Anderson examines the Eastern Question in all its aspects, drawing on secret treaty documents, embassy reports, and diplomats' memoirs. The Eastern Question is another name for the imperialist policies pursued by the Great Powers of Europe in the Near East, particularly the Ottoman Empire, from the late 18th century onwards. This form of politics, which prepared the ground for the emergence of modern international diplomacy, is a product of secret treaties that consider sensitive balances, long-term interests, and, above all, ambitious politicians. A series of political and economic events within the Eastern Question, from the Suez Canal to the Baghdad Railway project, and from Balkan nationalism to the Arab uprising, shed light on contemporary issues through Anderson's narrative.
