'Because I am a Girl: The State of the World's Girls' is a series of reports examining the rights and needs of girls and young women in both developed and developing nations, focusing on issues distinct from those of male children and adult women. The series will report each year from 2007-2015, which is the same period as the United Nations Millennium development goals. Each report assesses the current state of the world's girls, provides case studies on selected issues, and presents an update on a cohort of girls from nine different countries who were born in 2007. Issues include discrimination, equality, violence, early marriage, and community education and programs. This 2012 report also looks at access to and participation in education.
