The author aims at leading students through a maze of documentation. The book contains the first student selection of British, French, German, Italian and Soviet documents, many of which are translated for the first time. Though the emphasis falls on the crisis years 1935-9, material is also included for the period 1929-35. The introductory essay has two themes. First, there was nothing unavoidable about the Second World War - there was a series of 'turning points' on the road to war.
