This volume features articles presented at the Intelligent Information Processing and Web Mining Conference IIS: IIPWM'04, held in Zakopane, Poland, from May 17-20, 2004. This event continues a series of 13 successful symposia on Intelligent Information Systems organized by the Institute of Computer Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences, focusing on new trends in Artificial Intelligence. The initiative began in 1992 with a small workshop aimed at showcasing results from Polish scientific centers and comparing them with research from Polish scientists in Europe and the USA, alongside their international collaborators. The concept proved popular, leading to the evolution of these meetings into regular symposia covering areas such as Machine Learning, Knowledge Discovery, Natural Language Processing, Knowledge-Based Systems, and Soft Computing, including Fuzzy and Rough Sets, Bayesian Networks, Neural Networks, and Evolutionary Algorithms. Typically, around 50 papers from researchers in Poland and abroad are presented at the conference. This year's event places a stronger emphasis on the latest advancements in Artificial Intelligence, particularly in the realm of Web mining.
