Bei der hier vorliegenden Autobiografie handelt es sich um ein Interview, das der amerikanische Journalist und Schriftsteller Edgar Snow mit dem Vorsitzenden Mao Tse-tung geführt hat. Edgar Snow (1905–1972) hatte Journalismus an der Universität von Missouri studiert, sein Studium jedoch vorzeitig abgebrochen, um als Reporter und Auslandskorrespondent zu arbeiten. Nach ersten journalistischen Tätigkeiten in den USA reiste er 1928 nach Asien und ließ sich schließlich in China nieder. 1936 reiste Snow nach Yan’an, wo er Mao Tsetung und andere führende chinesische Kommunisten traf. In zahlreichen Gesprächen, darunter dem hier vorliegenden Interview, zeichnete Snow Maos Lebensgeschichte, politische Überzeugungen und revolutionäre Strategien auf. Diese Berichte bildeten den Ausgangspunkt für sein Buch „Roter Stern über China“ (Red Star Over China, London 1937), das weltweit große Beachtung fand. Das Interview aus dem vierten Kapitel des Buches „Roter Stern über China“ wurde später auf Spanisch unter dem Titel „Mi Vida“ in Buenos Aires im Jahr 1973 erneut veröffentlicht. Zum besseren Verständnis für heutige Leserinnen und Leser wurden erläuternde Fußnoten ergänzt.
