Art isn't just about creating work anymore. Today, external pressuresand constraints play a large role in the artistic process and production.In recognition of this reality, the Institut für Kunstkritik held a series ofconferences in 2006 and 2007 to explore the value system that resultsfrom what they dubbed the New Spirit of Capitalism and to confronttheoretical models with ad-hoc conditions of production. The thoughtsof conference participants Luc Boltanski, Sabeth Buchmann, TimGriffin, W.J.T. Mitchell, Sighard Neckel, Martin Saar, and Paolo Virnoare compiled in this book of questions and dilemmas for today'scultural producers and society at large.

In reading all the theoretical contributions to this book, an essentially common idea of the social can be observed which is of fundamental importance for a new definition of artistic a process-related order of institutionalized actions, including the linguistic actions to which individuals are exposed. For here, in the repetition of such institutionalized acts, is where subjects first emerge at all. Objects, whether they be objects of everyday use or whole architectures, are like moulds which provide for the institutionalization of actions. The artist emerges as a social figure, as the product of a society and the agent of political interests. From this point of view, the status of objects, the status of the “work” is not the expression of a circumscribed meaning, but the instrument of forming a subject. The opposition of theory and practice becomes obsolete. Subject and object are meaning written into actions.

This publication examines Lonzi's legacy and its relationship to historical and contemporary art.

Katinka Bocks reduzierte Arbeiten in den Bereichen Skulptur, Film und Installation verfolgen Spuren – sowohl historische, als auch verborgene –, die im Raum ein Spannungsfeld und für den Betrachter ungeahnte Dimensionen eröffnen. Die Wechselwirkung von Natürlichkeit und Künstlichkeit, von Prozessualem und Statischem, von Äußerem und Innerem ist Grundvehikel von Bocks Arbeiten. Wie eine Forscherin führt sie Experimente mit Naturgesetzen vor, die am Ende doch durch eine sehr einfache, amateurhafte Leichtigkeit einen ironischen Bruch offenkundig werden lassen. Über die Analyse von Raum und Prozessualem hinaus bestechen die Arbeiten von Katinka Bock durch eine sehr poetische Notation und eröffnen eigene, sinnliche Ebenen. Katinka Bock (*1976) studierte in Berlin-Weißensee und ging anschließend zu einem Aufbaustudium nach Lyon, wo sie seit letztem Jahr lehrt.

Es logierte bereits in einer Fleischerei, einer Business-Etage, in den Amtsstuben eines Finanzamts und ist derzeit in einer Schule zu Hause. Quer durch die Stadt hat das weiße Haus Ausstellungen an sechs Stationen gezeigt, mit 'studio das weiße haus' ein Artist-in-Residence-Programm sowie Ateliers für lokale Kunstschaffende entwickelt. Es war eine der ersten Institutionen Wiens, die den Austausch von Kuratoren und Kultur-Journalisten ins Programm aufgenommen hat. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Austrian Cultural Forum New York und der Erste Group wurde der Erste Bank MehrWERT Kunstpreis etabliert, ebenso wie Kooperationen mit nationalen und internationalen Universitäten und Kulturinstitutionen. In zehn Jahren wurden in den 'weißen Häusern' Böden geschrubbt, Dächer poliert, Wände eingerissen und Positionen von rund 650 nationalen und internationalen Künstlerinnen und Künstlern gezeigt. Das weiße Haus hat sich zu einer der umtriebigsten Locations der Stadt entwickelt und ist eine Plattform für meist junge Kunstschaffende. Die Publikation fasst dies zusammen, basierend auf Themen wie Institutionalisierung, Nomadentum, ortsspezifisches Arbeiten, die Hinterfragung einer feministischen Arbeitsweise und den aktuellen Status der New Media. Die Texte sind teils bereits publiziert und größtenteils neu geschrieben von international anerkannten Autorinnen und Autoren.
