Set against the harrowing backdrop of World War II, a brave gentile couple in Liepaja, Latvia, risk their lives to hide four Jewish individuals in their cellar. As more Jews join them, the group initially experiences hope, but tensions rise due to overcrowding, food shortages, and constant threats from police searches and air raids. The situation becomes even more tragic when one of their rescuers, Roberts Seduls, is killed shortly before the war's end. The story culminates in the complex emotions surrounding liberation by the Red Army after the German surrender.

Edward Anders, son of Adolf Alperovitch (1897-1941) and Erika Sheftelovitch-Meiran (1895-1992), was born in 1926 in Libau, Latvia. He immigrated to the United States in 1949. He married Joan Fleming in 1955. They had two children.
