Kniha známého pokořitele Mount Everestu pojednává o jiné jeho výpravě. Pramen Gangy byl znám, avšak ještě dlouho si spolu s celým horním tokem řeky Bhágirathí zachovával pověst tajemného a nepřístupného místa, a to nejen díky své odlehlosti, nýbrž i proto, že Indové dlouho bránili cizincům v přístupu do této části své země. Nedostal se sem ani v Indii velmi populární Sir Edmund Hillary, když uspořádal v roce 1977 svou slavnou expedici „From the Ocean to the Sky“ („Od oceánu k oblakům“), během níž se pokusil vyjet na tryskových člunech od ústí Gangy do moře co nejvýše proti jejímu proudu.
