Autoři obsáhle pojednávají o válečných konfliktech starověkého Izraele. Své závěry opírají o výsledky současného archeologického a historiografického bádání a o moderní trendy biblické kritiky. Oba autoři prožili mnoho let vojenské služby na místech, o nichž Bible vypráví.
