Pendrake had stumbled into a land whose inhabitants were picked up at random by a time machine. They came from many centuries, but they had one thing in common; they submitted, out of fear, to the rule of the most brutal and primitive among them...The Beast. He looked like a creature out of the primeval jungle, hairy and naked except for the black fur strip that hung around his belly. With no weapons but his superior intellect, Pendrake had to fight to stay alive -- at least long enough to rescue his wife from the savage grasp of The Beast.

Gilbert Gosseyn, the null-A genius of the Earth-Venus war, never realized that this interplanetary war was but a borrowed incident in a greater conflict until he was thrust onto the galactic battlefield as a mere pawn. But in picking Gosseyn as "expendable," those cosmic opponents unleashed forces they had never dreamed existed. One was the entrance of a powerful third party in the war. The second was the ability of certain other pawns to foresee the future. Finally, there was the secret of Gosseyn's original purpose - a secret which could decide the fate of the entire galaxy!

Darkness on Diamondia
- 192pagine
- 7 ore di lettura
Colonel Martin was sent to Diamondia to report on the war between Earth-descended colonists and the guerilla warriors of the inhuman Irsk. Because something was going terribly wrong -- a darkness was setting in, mental confusion was epidemic, and there was evidence of Outside interference. The Darkness was impartial, and Morton's encounters with it were the most disturbing events of his career. For it seemed as if the Outside were deliberately stirring up the planetary pot, mixing minds with minds, and personalities with personalities. But when Morton realized that the only solution might be to find and use the incalculable power of the Lositeen Weapon, he realized also that the decision was too great for any one man -- even for all men together -- to make. A brand new novel from the Slan-man, A. E. van Vogt himself...with all of van Vogt's mind-shaking fireworks and narrative mastery.

For Captain Maltby of Fifty Suns is alsop the passionate lover of Lady Laurr, Grand Commander of the Star Cluster, warrior of Imperial Earth...
The computer controlled them all. Bio-magnetic recognition was infallible, instant. Its eyes were everywhere -- in the street, in the home. There was no escape as it scanned, recorded, knew. An armed Computer Maintenance Corps handled social control. The military-style personnel thought the computer was God. But the computer stole. Energy. With every personal scan, even casual recognition check there went a small but significant subject-to-computer mental energy transfer. Only the Computer Rebel Society saw the threat and had the will to organise against it. The computer, of course, made them outlaws.

Centaurus was the destination of the space ship The Hope of Man. It had been traveling through space for almost twenty years, and still nine years of flight remained before Centaurus would be reached. For many on board the craft earth had become a vague memory, while for others it was a mere dot in the vast starry reaches of space. Restlessness was evident everywhere; the people wanted to return to a place they knew was inhabited -- not continue to an unknown where life was questionable. Mutiny seemed inevitable. Captain Lesbee knew that mutiny bred mutiny, but what was more vital was his knowledge of earth's possible obliteration. The one hope was Centaurus. Now more than ever, there could be no turning back. Order had to be maintained even at the price of human life. This is only the beginning of a dramatic and fascinating interspace voyage, where the greatest hazards are not the forces of an unknown scientific world, but man himself.

With the publication, in the July 1941 issue of Astounding Science Fiction magazine, of the story Seesaw, van Vogt began unfolding the complex tale of the oppressive Empire of Isher and the mysterious Weapon Shops. This volume, The Weapon Shops of Isher, includes the first three parts of the saga and introduces perhaps the most famous political slogan of science fiction: The Right to Buy Weapons is the Right to Be Free. Born at the height of Nazi conquest, the Isher stories suggested that an oppressive government could never completely subjugate its own citizens if they were well armed. The audience appeal was immediate and has endured long beyond other stories of alien invasion, global conflict and post war nuclear angst.

Following the success of the stories that formed The Weapon Shops of Isher, van Vogt wrote the novel, The Weapon Makers, in 1943, to enlarge the story of human immortality, the conflict between a controlling government, The House of Isher, the mysterious Weapon Shops and man's place in the universe. The promise of the Weapon Shops' slogan, The Right to Buy Weapons is the Right to Be Free, is described thus: "Many of these weapons still carried the old names. “Guns” they were called, or “revolvers,” or “rifles,” but there the resemblance ended. These “guns” did not shoot bullets, they discharged energy in many forms and quantities. Some of them could kill or destroy at a thousand miles if necessary, and yet they were controlled by the same sensitive elements as the Weapon Shop door. Just as the door refused to open for police officers, Imperial soldiers or people unfriendly to the Shops, so these guns had been set to fire only in self-defense, and against certain animals during open season. They also had other special qualities, particularly as to defense and speed of operation."
