Jacob Grimm was perhaps the first man who commanded a wide enough view of the whole field of Teutonic languages and literature to be able to bring into focus the scattered facts which show the prevalence of one system of thought among all the Teutonic nations from Iceland to the Danube. In this he was materially aided by his mastery of the true principles of philology, which he was the first to establish on a firm scientific basis, and which enabled him to trace a word with certitude through the strangest disguises. As a storehouse of facts within the special province of Teutonic mythology, and as a clue to the derivation and significance of the names of persons and things in the various versions of myth, this work has never been superseded and perhaps it never can be. Partial Contents: God; worship; temples; priests; gods; goddesses; condition of gods; heroes; wise women.

The translations...are direct and fresh, unexpurgated and unsweetened. Illustrated by Maurice Sendak "Many Fur" is translated from the text in the first edition of Kinder- und Hansmarchen (1812, 1815), which is more coherent than the versions in the later editions. The other tales are translated from lalter texts, as reworked by the Brothers Grimm. "Snow White" is a German fairy tale known across much of Europe and is today one of the most famous fairy tales worldwide. The Brothers Grimm published it in 1812 in the first edition of their collection Grimm's' Fairy Tales. The fairy tale features such elements as the magic mirror, the poisoned apple, the glass coffin, and the characters of the evil queen/stepmother and the seven dwarfs. The seven dwarfs were first given individual names in the Broadway play Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1912) and then given different names in Walt Disney's 1937 film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. At the beginning of the story, a queen sits sewing at an open window during a winter snowfall when she pricks her finger with her needle, causing three drops of red blood to drip onto the freshly fallen white snow on the black windowsill. Admiring the beauty of the resulting color combination, she says to herself, "Oh how I wish that I had a daughter that had skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood, and hair as black as ebony". Soon after that, the Queen gives birth to a baby girl who is as white as snow, has lips red as blood and has hair as black as ebony. They name her 'Snow White' (Wikipedia)

Charles Perrault's time-honoured stories have been passed down from the seventeenth century to the present day, giving us the classic fairy tales that people of all ages know and adore: Cinderella, with the glass slipper that will fit her foot alone; the princess who is cursed to sleep for a hundred years until true love's kiss wakes her; Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf, and many, many more. Like the Brothers Grimm after him, Perrault took childhood fears and turned them into inspiriting fantasies. Full of humanity and a surprising wit, the impact these fables has had on imaginations young and old cannot be overstated.

Gertraud Kiedaisch hat das Märchen in betörende Drehbilder umgesetzt, die durch das alte Prinzip der Drehscheibe zusätzliche Dimensionen und Bewegung erhalten.
