Ingenieur Banks lädt Colonel Munro, Captain Hood und den Franzosen Maucler zu einer Expedition in den Norden Indiens ein. Als Transportmittel dient ihnen ein riesiger, aus Stahl gefertigter Elefant, der von einer Dampfmaschine angetrieben wird und ursprünglich als Spielzeug für einen wohlhabenden Rajah hergestellt wurde. Dieser Koloss zieht zwei mobile Wohnbungalows und kann auch im Wasser fahren, da seine Beine als Schaufelräder fungieren. Der Elefant hat einen erhobenen Rüssel, der als Schornstein dient. Die Beschreibung der Reise dient Verne als Rahmen, in den er neben geografischen und natürlichen Besonderheiten den Hauptabenteuer-Motiv einfügt: Colonel Munros Rache für den Tod seiner Frau. Verantwortlich dafür ist Nana Sahib, ein ehemaliger Anführer des Sepoy-Aufstands von 1857, der seit zehn Jahren wegen seiner Verbrechen gesucht wird. Munros Frau wurde auf Nanas Befehl in einen Brunnen geworfen und dort begraben. Es wird jedoch auch enthüllt, dass Colonel Munro für den Tod von Nanas Gefährtin verantwortlich ist.

La trama tuttavia continuò il suo percorso all'interno della fantasia del suo autore e, pur valendosi di alcuni spunti originali si staccò dal primo abbozzo evolvendosi come terza valva del trittico e discernendo uno dei romanzi più amati dal pubblico e analizzati dalla critica.Uscito a puntate su un periodico a partire dal 1 gennaio 1974, "L'isola misteriosa" venne distribuito in volume già a inizio autunno e fu accolto trionfalmente. Aperto sulla guerra civile americana, il romanzo si lascia subito dietro la storia per rifugiarsi nella geografia: medium del trapasso è l'aerostato con il quale Verne aveva iniziato nel '63 la carriera di scrittore ("Cinque settimane in pallone"), mentre la falsariga degli eventi la offre il "Robinson" di Daniel Defoe. Un Robinson addottrinato, come esigono il positivistico Ottocento e la genialità precorritrice di Verne. Il gruppetto di naufraghi fa proprio l'imperativo di piegare la natura ai bisogni tramite la scienza, e quando i suoi sforzi riescono, per forza di cose, inadeguati, ecco entrare in scena - soccorrevole e invisibile - la figura mitica di Nemo, la cui finale apparizione va annoverata tra le pagine giustamente celebri della letteratura.
