Il débute par des nouvelles, mais connaît son premier succès – immense – avec Territoire interdit, son premier roman, qui sera porté à l’écran l’année suivante. Son œvre, riche de près de 80 romans, est celle d’un grand romancier populaire (au sense élevé du terme) désireux d’explorer tous les terrains de la literature de l’ l’histoire, le mystère, l’espionnage et même la science-fiction. Dennis Wheatley, dont certains romans se sont vendus à plus d’un million et demi d’exemplaires et qui est célèbre dans les pays anglo-saxons, est mort en 1977.
