Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, known as Witkacy, was born on February 24, 1885, in Warsaw as the only son of the renowned writer, critic, and painter Stanisław Witkiewicz and his wife Maria, a music teacher. His parents were reportedly introduced by one of the most prominent actresses of the era, Helena Modrzejewska, who was a great admirer of Stanisław Witkiewicz. Modrzejewska became Witkacy's godmother in January 1891, as his theatrical and folkloric baptism took place in Zakopane, where the Witkiewicz family had moved permanently a year earlier due to the father's tuberculosis. The godfather was the Highland storyteller Jan Krzeptowski Sabała. The book explores the life and artistic journey of Witkacy, delving into his complex relationships, his contributions to literature and art, and the cultural context of his time, revealing the intricacies of his character and the influences that shaped his work.
