From birth to death, this book illustrates moving events in the United States as reflected in Pulitzer Prize-winning photos. There are examples of heroic undertakings, romantic episodes, brutal encroachments, depressing attitudes as well as encouraging actions.
The Pulitzer Prizes for Press Photography are latecomers within the prestigious award system. Established during world War II, in 1942, they started with a general category called „Photography“, covering all kinds of pictures. After about a quarter-century, in 1968, this award category was devided into two separate prize groups, entitled „Spot News Photography“ and „Feature Photography“. This volume at first presents the decision-making processes leading to the annual Pulitzer Prize winners. In addition, in each case one award-earing photo is reproduced to give an idea about the broad spectrum of aspects and themes declared prize-worthy by the jurors.
