Flamingo, Stardust, Caesar's Palace--the sparkling neon signs that tower over the grand casinos and hotels on the Las Vegas strip are familiar not just in name but in fame. Las Vegas, that desert town built from sand, poker chips, and free buffets, has come to symbolize a certain kind of American culture that deals in extremes of mediatization, simulacra, privatization, and entertainment. Photographer Andreas Schmidt has taken his lens to the city, altering it in such a way that it appears blurred, seen from a passing car, reversed, or reflected in a window pane. A master of the unexpected and the unusual perspective, Schmidt takes super-wide-angle shots of the spectacular Vegas skyline, sandwiching it into the narrow horizontal gap between two levels of dark concrete pilings in a parking garage. He makes endless hotel corridors vanish into nothingness. He flows vast, empty convention halls and their wildly twilled carpets together to form absurd, magnificent patterns. In Schmidt's Las Vegas series, the glamour and glitter of the strip is exposed as pure fa ade, as the ultimate collective act of megalomania--but without ever losing any of its fascinating, perverse allure.

    • The paper examines the successful IPO of Evonik on April 25, 2013, highlighting its significance in the German chemistry sector. It discusses the company's previous delays in going public, attributed to unfavorable market conditions and insufficient investor demand, as seen in the case of Deutsche Annington. By analyzing these factors, the paper sheds light on the complexities and challenges companies face in the IPO process, providing insights into market dynamics and investor behavior during this critical financial event.

    • Focusing on the cultural frameworks of Germany and Japan, this seminar paper explores the distinct approaches to business leadership in both countries. It highlights the significance of understanding these differences for multinational companies to enhance employee motivation and mitigate the risks of cultural conflicts, ultimately aiming for greater success in global operations. The analysis is grounded in respected academic theories, making it a valuable resource for those interested in corporate governance and management strategies across cultures.

    • This thesis is about model order reduction methods for parametric and high-dimensional optimal feedback control problems for both linear and nonlinear systems. In the first part of this work, the reduced basis method for the algebraic Riccati equation is introduced. This method consists of the low-rank factor greedy algorithm for the construction of the basis, a rigorous and highly accurate error estimation theory and a strict offline/online splitting that ensures computational efficiency. The method is then applied to two classical feedback control problems for linear systems: The linear-quadratic regulator and the H2-optimal control problem. Error bounds for the controlled state and cost functional for the linear-quadratic regulator problem guarantee the quality of the approximation in the context of feedback control. In the second part two techniques for high-dimensional and parametric nonlinear feedback control problems are introduced. The first method combines parametric model order reduction techniques and efficient schemes for solving the parametric Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations that are associated with the optimal control problems. A complete computational workflow is introduced to get an efficient numerical scheme. The second method is a data-driven approach to approximate the value function of the feedback control problems with kernel interpolation techniques.

On his nighttime rambles through the City of London--i.e., its historical and financial heart--Andreas Schmidt (born 1967) documents the icy glamour of its epic-scaled financial palaces, in which empty lobbies, conference rooms and endless corridors proliferate. Schmidt's portrait of these eerily alienated realms restore the understanding that such environments, in their oversized grandeur, are very far from the civic good.
