Widowed Maggie Collier and her son return to her small Wisconsin hometown for the sake of her father-in-law, but her peaceful new life is shattered by his murder. Maggie discovers he stumbled onto the location of a kidnapped child, and crosses paths with Chicago lawyer Grant Holbrook, the child's uncle. The two begin to piece together disturbing clues about a monster that lives among them.
