Bandi («lucciola») è lo pseudonimo di un scrittore nordcoreano, membro dell'organizzazione ufficiale degli autori del regime. I racconti contenuti in questo libro, scritti nell'arco di oltre vent'anni, dopo lunghe peripezie hanno superato una delle frontiere più chiuse del mondo, nascosti tra le pagine di alcuni volumi di propaganda comunista, per essere poi pubblicati nel 2014 in Corea del Sud. Bandi, invece, ha scelto di restare e di dare voce, segretamente, al dolore e alla sofferenza di un popolo ridotto al silenzio dalla dittatura. I suoi racconti diventano quindi delle finestre su un paese pressoché sconosciuto in Occidente, e sulle esistenze dei suoi abitanti, segnate dalla miseria, dall'assurdità di una burocrazia opprimente, dalla gestione arbitraria del potere, dall'ipocrisia dell'informazione di governo. Incontriamo un uomo che non riesce a tornare a casa per salutare la madre morente, smarrito tra treni che non partono e interminabili controlli; bambini che hanno dato ai loro demoni notturni il volto degli uomini rappresentati negli onnipresenti manifesti di propaganda; anziani schiacciati da una vita di lavoro, fatiche, umiliazioni, paura.
