A special exhibition organized by the National Museums in Berlin, in collaboration with the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, the Musei del Bargello in Florence, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, highlights the work of the Florentine sculptor Donatello (c. 1386-1466), a key figure in the Italian Renaissance. Recognized by his contemporaries for his significance, Donatello attracted clients from across Italy. He was a versatile innovator, constantly experimenting with materials and artistic techniques, including the use of central perspective, the rediscovery of terracotta, and groundbreaking achievements in bas-relief, such as the bronze equestrian monument. This exhibition marks the first comprehensive showcase of Donatello's work in Germany in nearly 40 years, emphasizing not only the complexity of his creations but also his profound influence on the evolution of Renaissance art, particularly painting. This unique international project includes one of the largest and most diverse collections of Donatello's works, featuring sculptures and reliefs in marble, terracotta, and bronze that have never been displayed together before, making these exhibitions truly exceptional experiences.

Aby Warburg, one of the most important art-historians of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, studied the "afterlife" of ancient motifs in European culture since the Renaissance, with the conviction that antiquity had an archetypical, emotional significance for Renaissance artists that is revealed in key motifs and core issues. Warburg’s final work was his Mnemosyne Atlas , a collection of nearly 1000 images summarizing his studies and showing new directions in visual culture. The book for the exhibition at the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, presents nearly fifty original artworks from ten collections of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin that Warburg selected for the atlas. They illustrate relationships between works and cultures that transcend the boundaries of time and space and simultaneously explain the complex thinking that underlies Warburg’s atlas exemplarily.
