Set against the backdrop of Vermont's rural life, the book features a unique farmer's alphabet illustrated with striking woodcut prints by Mary Azarian. Originally a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse, Azarian was commissioned to create this series in the late 1970s, capturing scenes that reflect the essence of the state's farming culture through each letter from A to Z. The artwork showcases her artistic talent and deep connection to the community, ultimately leading to her recognition as a Caldecott medalist.
Because she is looking for something special, the great barn cat notices but shows no interest in the activities of the animals--including puppies, crickets, butterflies, and others--which can be counted around her.
