This book accompanies an exhibition, The Nakeds, which is devoted to drawings of the body exposed. The naked body is frequently the physical terrain artists traverse in search of psychological truth. How to represent love, shame, solitude and sexual yearning?Drawing from the self or life model, from reproduction or the imagination, has provided artists with the freedom to explore desires, fears and fantasies. The Nakeds takes as its starting point selected drawings of the single figure by Egon Schiele. Una storia d'amore sboccia nella cittadina termale inglese di Bath tra un giovane e benestante pastore anglicano e la protagonista del romanzo, Catherine Morland. Creduta una ricca ereditiera, Catherine viene invitata dal padre del fidanzato nella residenza di famiglia, l'ex-abbazia di Northanger. Suggestionata dal luogo e ancor più dalle intense letture di romanzi dell'orrore all'epoca in gran voga, la giovane protagonista, in un classico scambio tra fantasia e realtà,vive banali eventi quotidiani alterandoli alla luce di immaginarie atmosfere di terrore. Una serie di malintesi, frutto della sua fantasia sovreccitata, mette a repentaglio il rapporto sentimentale appena nato, pregiudicato anche dalla scoperta delle sue reali condizioni economiche. Celebrazione dei riti d' iniziazione sociale della borghesia inglese di provincia a cavallo tra Sette e Ottocento, quest'opera della Austin non si esaurisce nella storia di una contrastata passione, ma rappresenta una sottile parodia del romanzo sentimentale e soprattutto del romanzo gotico, che resta di grande attualità ancora oggi.
