Ernest Howard Shepard fu un artista e illustratore di libri inglese. Divenne particolarmente noto per i suoi personaggi animali dall'aspetto umano presenti nelle sue illustrazioni per libri amati di Kenneth Grahame e A. A. Milne.
Inglese, commediografo, Milne iniziò la sua carriera di scrittore per ragazzi pubblicando una raccolta di poesie dedicate a suo figlio Christopher Robin. Incoraggiato dal successo riportato, Milne decise di mettere per iscritto anche le storie di Winnie Puh, con le quali aveva allietato l'infanzia del figlio.
