Marilyn French, 1929 in New York geboren, unterrichtete ab 1964 englische Literatur u. a. in Harvard, wo sie 1972 mit einer Arbeit über James Joyce promovierte. Ihr Bestseller «Frauen» wurde erstmals 1977 veröffentlicht und in über 20 Sprachen übersetzt. Marilyn French starb 2009 in New York.
