Young George Pendyce is entangled in an unhappy love affair with the carefree Mrs. Helen Bellew. The socially awkward Gregory Vigils, for reasons he scarcely understands, seeks Helen's divorce from her husband. The staunchly conservative landowner Mr. Horace Pendyce fights with all the tyranny he can muster to protect his estate and maintain his "face." His sensitive wife, Mrs. Margery Pendyce, strives to uncover the true intentions of the enigmatic Mrs. Bellew to free her son from hopeless entanglements. Ultimately, life in the country house continues with its busy comfort, moral cleanliness, the interplay of fresh air and floral warmth, complete mental tranquility, and a willful ignorance of any form of suffering.
