A New York Times Notable Book of 2023, this poignant account reveals one of the world's most pressing humanitarian crises through the eyes of a poet whose life is upended by genocide. As the Chinese government's brutal persecution of the Uyghur people escalated in 2017, Tahir Hamut Izgil witnessed the alarming disappearance of friends and neighbors. The Uyghurs, a predominantly Muslim minority in western China, faced horrific repression reminiscent of the darkest chapters of the twentieth century, exacerbated by a pervasive surveillance state. Over a million individuals have vanished into internment camps designed for Muslim minorities. Tahir, a prominent poet and intellectual, had previously endured persecution and torture after a 1996 attempt to travel abroad. However, he could not have foreseen the radical measures that would be taken against the Uyghurs two decades later. Signs of impending danger became clear when he was interrogated after a call with a fellow poet and learned of a friend’s life sentence for advocating Uyghur rights. As the local park emptied due to arrests, Tahir prepared for the worst, placing shoes and warm clothing by his door. Realizing that fleeing was their only hope, he and his wife made the harrowing decision to escape. This narrative chronicles the cultural and political devastation of Tahir's homeland and serves as a powerful call for global awareness of the ongoing catastrophe, honoring the s

    • It's 1914, and talk of war feels far away to Henry Gaunt, Sidney Ellwood and the rest of their classmates, safely ensconced in an idyllic boarding school in the English countryside. At seventeen, they're too young to enlist, and anyway, Gaunt is fighting his own private battle - an all-consuming infatuation with his best friend, the dreamy, poetic Ellwood - not having a clue that Ellwood is in love with him, always has been. When Gaunt's German mother asks him to enlist in the British army to protect the family from anti-German attacks, he signs up immediately, relieved to escape his overwhelming feelings for Ellwood. The front is horrific, of course, and though Gaunt tries to dissuade Ellwood from joining him on the battlefield, Ellwood soon rushes to join him. In the trenches, Ellwood and Gaunt find fleeting moments of solace in one another, but their friends are all dying, right in front of them, and at any moment they could be next. An epic tale of both the devastating tragedies of war and the forbidden romance that blooms in its grip, In Memoriam is a breathtaking debut.

From Madagascar and New Guinea to the Pacific Islands and the Northern Territory of Australia, young David Attenborough and his cameraman were aiming to record not just the wildlife, but the way of life of some of the indigenous people of these regions, whose traditions had never been encountered by most of the public before. In the late 1950s onward, following the success of the original Zoo Quest expeditions, Attenborough embarked on further travels in a very different part of the world. From the land divers of Pentecost Island and the sing-sings of New Guinea, to a Royal Kava ceremony on Tonga and the ancient art of the Northern Territory, it is a journey like no other. Alongside these remarkable cultures he encounters paradise birds, chameleons, sifakas and many more animals in some of the most unique environments on the planet. Written with David Attenborough's characteristic charm, humor and warmth, Journeys to the Other Side of the World is an inimitable adventure among people, places and the wildest of wildlife. span

It is 1947, and Beit Daras, a quiet village in Palestine surrounded by olive groves, is home to the Baraka family. Eldest daughter Nazmiyeh looks after her widowed mother, prone to wandering and strange outbursts, while her brother Mamdouh tends to the village bees. Their younger sister, Mariam, with her striking mismatched eyes, spends her days talking to imaginary friends and writing. When Israeli forces gather outside the town's borders, nobody suspects the terror that is about to descend. Soon the village is burning and, amidst smoke and ash, the family must take the long road to Gaza, in a walk that will test them to their limits. Sixty years later, Mamdouh's granddaughter Nur is living in America. She falls in love with a married man, a doctor who works in Palestine, and follows him to Gaza. There she meets Alwan, the mother of Khaled - a boy trapped in his own body, unable to wake up from a deep blue dream. It is through her that Nur will at last discover the ties of kinship that transcend distance - and even death. The Blue Between Sky and Water is a story of powerful, flawed women; of relocation, separation and heartache; of renewal, family, endurance, and love. Susan Abulhawa brings a raw humanity and delicate authority to the story of Palestine in this devastatingly beautiful tale.
