Francouzský malíř a grafik Paul Gauguin (1848–1903) výrazně ovlivnil umělecké směry dvacátého století, zejména fauvismus a expresionismus. Byl ovlivněn impresionismem, Pisarrem a japonskými tisky, ale impresionistický styl opustil a přiklonil se k pevné obrysové linii a barevným plochám v několika tónech. Tvořil kompozice ze života obyčejných lidí v Bretani, krajiny a později obrazy i reliéfy s motivy z Martiniku a Tahiti. Zaujal především monumentálním plošným pojetím a symbolikou barev.
