Robert Doisneau (1912-1994) est le plus reconnu des photographes connus. Pourtant, celui qui symbolise aujourd'hui, grâce à ses milliers de négatifs, une certaine idée de la France des années plus ou moins noies, entre 1930 et 1950, rest à bien des égards un inconnu. Longtemps classé dans la catégorie des reporters au petit bonheur la chance à cause de son insatiable curiosité, qui lui fit arpenter le pavé parisien avec la régularité d'un coucou suisse, Doisneau a lui-même mis de côté, presque effacé, comme par une excessive discrétion, toute une partie de son travail glané au hasard des rues, dans ces territoires ouvriers qu'il affectionnait au temps où la bagnole n'avait pas encore piqué la place aux piétons. C'est cette mémoire retrouvée que ce livre propose, nouvelle lecture d'une oeuvre rebondissante en ce qu'elle révèle, par son abondance même, l'originalité d'un homme au vocabulaire gouleyant et qui fut aussi bien l'ami des poètes que des ivrognes.
