His life's crowning achievement, his greatest film, would have told the story of a European village as the last hour of 999 AD approached - 12am - which the villagers thought would bring Armageddon.

A narrator reflects on his childhood experiences with an old osteopath who alleges he treated Al Capone. The story intertwines the 1960s England with 1920s Chicago, creating a beautifully crafted and haunting narrative of memory and evil.
