First published in Norway in 1954, this lyrical novel is about an abrupt change from childish dreams and safety to grown-up responsibilities and happiness. On the surface it deals with what happens to two youngsters left for a night alone on their parents' farm, but like The Ice Palace and other great novels by Vesaas, the themes are far deeper: How difficult the road is from I to you or we, even when love is involved.

This is the story of Mattis, a mentally handicapped man who lives with and is cared for by his older sister, Hege. Within their isolated, lakeside existence, Mattis cannot make sense of his tangled thoughts, frightening apparitions, surges of emotion and clever insights. When a travelling lumberjack attracts Hege's affections, the disruption is too much for Mattis to bear. This Norwegian masterpiece sensitively captures a mystic command of the natural world, the prison of unfulfilled time and the fragility of the human mind. The narrative is sparse, poetic and contemplative, with an ending that crescendos into heartbreak.

Searing and lyrical, Marie-Sissi Labrèche's auto-fictional novel, Borderline, describes a young girl's experience growing up in Montreal's working-class neighbourhood of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. Raised by her "two mothers" - a stern grandmother and a mother struggling with schizophrenia, the story's protagonist, Sissi, is artistic, feral, fragile, insightful, and wild. The novel flicks between the traumas of Sissi's young childhood and early adulthood, spinning a web of connections between her history and the stories she begins to unspool as she studies writing in school. Raw, violent, and at times absurd, Borderline treats all things - the city, class, education, mental health, despair, sexuality, love, and art, with an unflinching, unblinking regard.

On l'a vue traverser, dans les journaux, les pages Arts et spectacles puis les pages Faits divers du côté des colonnes Justice, il y a quelques années. Ce serait bien, pensez-vous, de lui consacrer une émission. Certes. Malheureusement, Gloire est un peu difficile à joindre. Le talent d'Echenoz n'a jamais été aussi éclatant maîtrisé et plaisant. C'est un bien grand crime en effet que de séduire ses lecteurs ; de les faire sourire et rire, de les enchanter de phrases légères comme du duvet, de distiller le saugrenu, de jouer avec la langue comme un chat avec une pelote de laine. Echenoz déploie une écriture qui ne pèse pas, qui n'appuie jamais, comme si elle se refusait à exercer le moindre pouvoir de persuasion ou de coercition. Son pouvoir est ailleurs, dans l'ordre poétique. D'où l'étrange impression de se mouvoir dans un espace aérien, libéré des règles de la gravitation. Nabokov et Queneau souvent donnent aussi le sentiment que leur écriture n'adhère pas, qu'elle n'est pas destinée à coller au réel, mais à d'autres usages moins gluants. Pierre Lepape, Le Monde.
