Nella penisola di Guérande, affacciata sull'oceano, l'aria ha il sapore del sale. Ma è proprio mentre si gode una generosa dose di caffeina che il più zelante dei suoi ispettori lo disturba per comunicargli una notizia che ha dell’inaudito: un omicidio a Pont-Aven, il pittoresco borgo di pescatori che sta per riempirsi di villeggianti in quell’estate insolitamente calda. E la vittima è nientemeno che Pierre-Louis Pennec, novantunenne proprietario del mitico Hotel Central, segnalato su tutte le guide come luogo di soggiorno di celebri artisti, tra cui Paul Gauguin. Il commissario Dupin dovrà districarsi tra le pressioni delle autorità locali, che temono di veder compromessa la stagione turistica, e l’ostinato silenzio degli autoctoni, seguendo una pista che sembra condurre proprio a una tela del famoso pittore.
