V úvodu autor, mladý veterinář, nastupuje na noční provoz nonstop veterinární kliniky v anglickém Brightonu. Každý podvečer v šest hodin střídá svou denní kolegyni a do osmi do rána přijímá akutní případy, jak v ordinaci, tak i na zavolanou s dojezdem ke klientovi domů.
