This exquisite collection of 17th and early 18th century Dutch painting is both the largest and the most representative survey of old European art within the collections of the National Gallery in Prague. Its significance by far transcends the borders of the Czech Republic. The unique nature of this collection is enhanced by the fact that its current form is the result of a complex evolution: great collectors, renowned connoiseurs, and even artists themselves have contributed to it over the years, from the 18th century to the present day. For the first time, the Prague collection of Golden Age Dutch paintings is presented to scholars and art lovers in the form of a collection catalogue featuring the most up-to-date research and critical assessment of the collection.

Průvodce výstavou nabízí jedinečný pohled na kolekci holandských obrazů a grafik17. araného 18. století ze sbírek Národní galerie v Praze, doplněnou o zápůjčky z Nizozemí, Německa, Maďarska a České republiky, úzce související s pražskými díly a utvářející unikátní spojitosti. Vyprávění příběhů, které jsou založeny na výsledcích svědomitého výzkumu, zprostředkovává životní zkušenosti a předává vědomosti o zlatém věku nizozemského umění.

Im Zeitraum von 1580 bis 1620 änderte sich der ästhetische Landschaftsbegriff entscheidend. Die Berg- und Waldlandschaften, in denen erstmals die Wildnis als eigenständiges Thema der Landschaftsmalerei auftritt, nehmen eine Schlüsselstellung ein. Sie sollen hier als ein zusammenhängendes, historisches Phänomen aus dem Natur- und Kunstverständnis ihrer Zeit als Teil eines „Prozesses der visuellen Neugier“ interpretiert werden. Der erste Teil behandelt den begriffs- und ideengeschichtlichen sowie den kunsttheoretischen Kontext des Phänomens. Der zweite Teil gilt der Wildnisvorstellung im zeitgenössischen kulturellen Horizont. Im dritten Teil werden die Wildnisvorstellungen anhand der wichtigsten Staffagethemen, die in Berg- und Waldlandschaften erscheinen, differenziert und gedeutet.
