Ústřední postavou je mimořádně nadaný chlapec jménem Huj, který se narodil v obyčejné rolnické rodině žijící ve střední deltě nilského veletoku. Svůj talent Huj zdokonaluje na škole v Iunu, v níž mu jeho strýc zaplatil studia, aby se mohl stát písařem. V tomto výchovném zařízení se Huj také seznámí s Thutmosem, synem místního guvernéra. Záhy je také přijat do jeho rodiny, kde ho okouzlí Thutmosova sestra Anuket. Zároveň však Hujův vztah ke guvernérovi a jeho nejbližším osobám vyvolá v mnoha lidech závist.
