Ústřední postavou je mimořádně nadaný chlapec jménem Huj, který se narodil v obyčejné rolnické rodině žijící ve střední deltě nilského veletoku. Svůj talent Huj zdokonaluje na škole v Iunu, v níž mu jeho strýc zaplatil studia, aby se mohl stát písařem. V tomto výchovném zařízení se Huj také seznámí s Thutmosem, synem místního guvernéra.
