Johann Matthäus Bechstein (1757 - 1822) war ein deutscher Naturforscher, Forstwissenschaftler und Ornithologe und gilt als Pionier des Naturschutzes und der wissenschaftlichen Ornithologie. Seine umfangreichen naturkundlichen Schriften - er beschrieb unter anderem als Erster mehrere Vogelarten - brachten ihm schon zu Lebzeiten den Ruf als "Vater der deutschen Vogelkunde" ein.
