Im Zentrum der Forschungen des deutschen Sprachforschers August Friedrich Pott (1802 - 1887) "standen Probleme der Indogermanistik. Pott wandte die grimmsche Methode der etymologischen Lautvergleichung auf indogermanische Fragen an und entwickelte Methoden zur vergleichenden Analyse der Stammbildung." Pott widmet sich in dem hier vorliegenden Werk einem Teilaspekt der Sprache, "nämlich der bald unverkürzten, bald nur angedeuteten Doppelung, welche ... in schnell fasslichem Überblicke dem Kerne ihres Wesens und sprachlichen Wertes nach vor jedermanns Augen offen daliegt ..." "Wie aber schon geraume Zeit emsig forschender Beobachtung und kühnen Experimenten gelang, der Natur manch hübsches Geheimnis ihres Schaffens und Webens glücklich zu entreißen, so auch hat die Sprachforschung nunmehr nicht erst seit heute oder gestern sich mit Erfolg darauf verlegt, die Sprache bei ihrem, vor unaufmerksamen Blicken verborgenen Walten mit edler Neubegier zu belauschen und sich wo irgend möglich, über bloßes Ahnen des Dichters hinaus, zu klarem Verständnis zu bringen all die oft gar mannigfaltigen Mittel und Wege, welche diese, sich meistens selber unbewußt, trotzdem - allerdings wunderbar genug - mit mehr oder minder zweckentsprechendem Zutreffen einschlug bei ihrem kunstvoll einfachen Tun. Ich begnüge mich mit Feststellung und Erläuterung eines greifbaren Vorganges der Sprache. Nämlich der bald unverkürzten, bald nur angedeuteten Doppelung, welche, so häufig auch von ihr, in einigen Sprachen, z.B. in den polynesischen und in der koptischen, sogar bis zum Überdruß, Gebrauch gemacht wird, doch von mir nach einigen wenigen Gesichtspunkten der üblichen Verwendung geordnet, jetzt, wie ich mir schmeichle, in schnell faßlichem Überblick dem Kerne ihres Wesens und sprachlichen Wertes nach vor jedermanns Augen offen da liegt." [...] In seinem vorliegenden Werk geht August Friedrich Pott auf die Doppelung als eines der wichtigsten Bildungsmittel der Sprache ein. Er beleuchtet hierbei die Sprachen verschiedenster Nationen. Dieses Buch ist ein unveränderter Nachdruck der Originalausgabe von 1862.
