Il Dhammapada espone, sotto forma di strofe poetiche, i concetti fondamentali del buddhismo antico. Il titolo dell'opera, composta probabilmente intorno al III secolo a. C., significa "parole di Dharma" dove Dharma è parola derivata da una radice linguistica che significa "sostenere" e indica qualcosa di saldo e stabile: il termine è passato a indicare la legge che sostiene l'universo, tanto la legge fisica quanto la legge morale.
