Vánoční koleda je osobním dramatem člověka, které oslovuje další a další generace čtenářů již přes 170 let. Rozsahem nedlouhá „moralita“ o pěti kapitolách se dočkala mnoha dramatizací, operního i filmového zpracování. Důvod není jen v silném příběhu či literárních kvalitách. Kromě nich je tu cosi, co se nás bytostně týká, co potřebujeme v životě takřka neustále: naděje. Kniha vychází s ilustracemi Roberta Innocentiho (1940), italského mezinárodně uznávaného výtvarníka, který získal četná ocenění včetně Ceny Hanse Christiana Andersena (2008). O značném přesahu jeho díla svědčí i to, že knihy s Innocentiho ilustracemi vydávají nakladatelé v Evropě, Asii, USA i v Japonsku a není tedy divu, že v deníku The New York Times byl představen jako „jeden z největších ilustrátorů dětských knih ve světě“. Kvůli Vánoční koledě navštívil Innocenti Londýn. Ne snad proto, že by zde chtěl objevit Dickensův svět, ale aby zhlédl originály výtvarných děl spisovatelových současníků. Inspiroval se a vlastní realistickou malbu k fantasknímu příběhu doplnil četnými detaily prostředí, výraznou expresí i magickým realismem, jimž dotváří sugestivní atmosféru Dickensova vyprávění.
