Prinz Hamlet ist von der Universität Wittenberg an den dänischen Königshof zurückgekehrt: Sein Vater war überraschend gestorben, und dessen Bruder Claudius, der neue König, hat Gertrud, Hamlets Mutter, bald darauf geheiratet. Hamlet ist von diesen Ereignissen getroffen und angeekelt und verweigert sich der Feierstimmung. Hamlets Freund Horatio glaubt, in der Nacht auf den Schlossmauern den Geist des toten Königs gesehen zu haben, und tatsächlich erscheint auch Hamlet der Geist seines Vaters und bestätigt ihm, was er bereits geahnt hat: Sein Vater wurde von Claudius betrogen und ermordet. Der Geist beauftragt Hamlet, den Mord, unter Schonung der Mutter, zu rächen. Hamlet nimmt nun zum Schein ein wunderliches Wesen an. Er spricht, scheinbar zusammenhanglos, doppeldeutige Sätze, in denen sowohl Provokation als auch Ekel vor der Welt anklingen. Claudius beobachtet argwöhnisch Hamlets seltsames Benehmen, doch sein Oberkämmerer Polonius erklärt das eigenartige Verhalten mit Hamlets unerfüllter Liebe zu seiner Tochter Ophelia. Claudius lässt seinen Neffen von dessen Jugendfreunden Rosenkranz und Güldenstern überwachen, und Polonius arrangiert ein Gespräch zwischen Hamlet und Ophelia, das er und der König belauschen. Als Hamlet bemerkt, dass ihn Ophelia nur aushorchen will, steigert er sich wiederum in verwirrende Reden. Eine reisende Schauspieltruppe gibt Hamlet die Gelegenheit, Claudius eine Falle zu stellen. Der Prinz lässt die Schauspieler ein Stück aufführen, in dem ein König auf gleiche Weise wie Hamlets Vater ermordet wird und der Mörder dessen Frau für sich gewinnt. Noch ehe das Spiel zu Ende ist, bricht Claudius es an der entlarvenden Stelle abrupt ab. Nun gibt es für Hamlet keine Zweifel mehr an der Schuld des Onkels. Dennoch zögert er, Claudius zu töten. Anschließend aber bemerkt er, dass auch ein Gespräch, das er mit seiner Mutter führt, belauscht wird, und er tötet mit einem Stich durch die Tapete den Spitzel. Es ist Polonius, nicht, wie der Prinz annahm, der König. Claudius will nun Hamlet rasch und für immer loswerden. Er überträgt ihm eine Mission nach England, Rosenkranz und Güldenstern sollen ihn auf der Reise begleiten. Sie führen einen Brief mit, der den Auftrag enthält, Hamlet in England zu töten. Doch unterwegs entdeckt Hamlet sein Todesurteil und schreibt es auf Rosenkranz und Güldenstern um. Nach Dänemark zurückgekehrt, wird er Zeuge von Ophelias Begräbnis, die im Wahnsinn in den Fluss gegangen ist. Vor dem Grab kommt es zu einem Kampf zwischen Hamlet und Laertes, dem Bruder der Ophelia. Die Kontrahenten werden getrennt, das Duell soll aber vor dem gesamten Hof nachgeholt werden. Der König, der mit Mühe den Aufruhr bändigen konnte, den Laertes wegen der Ermordung des Polonius ausgelöst hatte, will Laertes nun als Werkzeug gebrauchen, um Hamlet endgültig zu beseitigen. Die Degenspitze des Laertes wird auf seinen Rat vergiftet. Außerdem stellt er noch einen Becher mit vergiftetem Wein bereit. Während des Duells trinkt die ahnungslose Königin aus diesem Giftkelch. Beim Kampf wird Hamlet von Laertes leicht getroffen, in der Hitze des Gefechtes wechseln beide die Waffen, und Hamlet verwundet Laertes mit dem vergifteten Degen. Als die Königin tot zu Boden sinkt und der sterbende Laertes die Intrigen des Königs aufdeckt, findet Hamlet - ebenfalls sterbend - endlich die Kraft, Claudius zu töten. Das Erbe Hamlets tritt der junge, kriegerische Prinz von Norwegen, Fortinbras, an. Wir kennen diesen Hamlet, wie wir unser Gesicht kennen, hat Heinrich Heine mehrdeutig formuliert. Kaum eine Dichtung hat derart die Fantasie der Kommentatoren angeheizt und kaum eine Dichtung dürfte so unterschiedlich ausgelegt worden sein. So mag die Ansicht zutreffen, der gesamte Reichtum von Shakespeares Tragödie könne nie an einem Theaterabend ausgelotet werden, dafür aber ermögliche die Bühne in einer Hinsicht Bereicherung: die Bereicherung nämlich, um
